Position Summary:

The primary role of the Math Instructional Specialist is to work directly with teachers, campus coaches, directors and the
Regional Director of Academics, to improve teaching and learning to ensure all students are successful. Assist in the
effective and efficient operations of the Thrive instructional initiatives which includes curriculum, professional development,
and assessment. Under the general supervision of the Regional Director of Academics, the Math Instructional Specialist, will
utilize data to support developing and improving learning opportunities for students, as well as provide coaching to support
math programs. The Math Instructional Specialist will support, coach, and mentor campus Math Instructional Coaches and
teachers.

Qualifications:
Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Related Field from an accredited institution
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • ESL and/or Gifted certification (preferred)
  • Master's degree in educational administration or curriculum and instruction (preferred)

    Experience:
    • 5+ years of successful classroom elementary/secondary math teaching experience
    • Experience in teacher mentoring/coaching or willingness to research, understand and implement effective practices
    • Experience using student and campus level data to select, implement, and differentiate instructional methods designed to meet each student's individual needs.

      • Skills in integrating technology into instruction
      • Excellent planning, organizational, communication and time management skills.
      • Ability to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
      • Strong interpersonal skills

        Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
        • Strong core content knowledge in math
        • Knowledge and experience with classroom implementation of a rigorous curriculum and instructional strategies in math
        • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies and research-based best practices including (but not limited to) project-based learning, differentiated instruction, lesson planning, and student assessment
        • Evidence of skill in lesson/unit/year planning, organization, and collaboration
        • Knowledge and experience in coaching and training effective professional development practices, ELL strategies, adult learning methodology, and RTI strategies facilitation, training, and presentation skills
        • Willingness to participate in professional development for coaching duties, that will teach strategies and best practices for mentoring, facilitating, and training
        • Passion for increasing student learning and teacher knowledge and effectiveness
        • Effective verbal and written skills
        • Effective technology and word processing skills (experience with Google Suite prefered)
        • Ability to extensively travel to school sites with overnight stay

          Responsibilities and Duties:
          • Apply knowledge of content and course standards, effective research-based instructional practices and assessment methods to curriculum development and program initiatives
          • Design and present professional development using effective professional development standards
          • Conduct needs analysis to identify teaching and learning needs at each campus
          • Assist math coaches and teachers (in teams or individually) to refine their knowledge and skills.
          • Methods of instruction will include modeling effective instruction using a gradual release structure, co-teaching, peer observation, and in-class coaching.
          • Work with math coaches and teachers to assist with the structure of common planning time and determine accountability measures to ensure common planning time is used effectively.

            Assist the Regional Director of Academics in:

            1. Designing, developing, implementing and evaluating new programs and initiatives
            2. Planning, development, field-testing, implementation and evaluation of curriculum;
            3. Coordinating curriculum planning and development within and across departments
            4. Ensuring curricular alignment with the comprehensive curriculum management plan
            • Research innovative programs and strategies
            • Complete a coaching report for each session of coaching or technical assistance provided to a campus Math Instructional Coach/campus
            • Respond promptly to telephone and email inquiries from teachers, coaches and administrators.
            • Attend district level training and provide campus level professional development
            • Provide ongoing feedback to campus administration to be used in the teacher evaluation process.
            • Assist with the campus strategic plan and formulation of the CIP.
            • Assist in the development, monitoring and implementation of teacher intervention plans.
            • Attend campus and district meetings/trainings as assigned.
            • Serve as a member of the THRIVE leadership team.
            • Analyze student performance data and develop plans to meet identified student needs.
            • Act as a committee chairperson for the selection, adoption, budgeting, and evaluation of instructional materials for math (textbooks, software, and instructional technology)
            • Ensure alignment with state standards, district curriculum, and comprehensive district vision for math.
            • Develop and lead the delivery of professional learning for teachers, specialists, and administrators.
            • Monitor the quality and implementation of math program activities and make recommendations for adjustments as needed.
            • Provide technical assistance and support to teachers and building administrators.
            • Collaborate with the Departments of Special Education, ESL/Bilingual Services, Advanced Academics, and Career and Technical Education to ensure alignment and high quality instruction, materials, and professional learning for all teachers of these populations of students.
            • Develop and maintain strong and positive working relationships with colleagues across the district, specifically with elementary and secondary school leadership.
            • Provide regular updates of programs activities and services to appropriate audiences.
            • Stay abreast of current research, best practices, and trends related to math instruction.
            • Support teacher growth in implementing the core academic instructional initiatives to enable achievement for all students through regular classroom observations and teacher feedback sessions
            • Provide core academic collaborative instructional support to teachers through problem solving, modeling lessons, scheduling opportunities for peer observations, and conducting mini-training sessions
            • Provide assistance in blending core content knowledge and knowledge of differentiated instruction for core academic teachers
            • Support core academic teachers by sharing materials and strategies to meet the needs of all students.
            • Develop, lead and support professional learning for teachers
            • Develop and prioritize academic intervention goals, based upon the disaggregation of data to generate solutions relative to the instructional initiatives
            • Track, maintain, and organize student core academic achievement data, in an effort to make timely and appropriate decisions about curriculum assessments and instruction.
            • Facilitate and organize the assessment process as well as the regrouping of students and determination of tutoring needs based on students' mastery.
            • Provide recommendations to school leaders based upon data to design, implement, align, and assess school change initiatives to ensure alignment and focus on intended results to improve student growth and achievement.
            • Perform all other duties as assigned.
