The Director of Community and Media Relations is the district's communications leader overseeing all internal and external messaging, media relations, social and digital media, branding, marketing, and creative services. The Director leads the creation, execution and continuous refinement of a communications strategy that allows the district to improve the academic achievement of all students, values, and responds to constituent concerns, and promotes transparency and accountability. The Director organizes and manages a team consisting of media relations, website management, social media, video production and public information. Responsible for managing and directing the district's communications efforts to promote a climate of transparency, two-way dialogue, and support for district goals and initiatives.



Master's degree preferred in English, journalism, public relations, communications, or related field

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Excellent public relations, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees, parents, or the public

Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district

Thorough knowledge of the Texas Public Information Act

Thorough knowledge of community and public relations functions

Demonstrated skills and experience in public relations with writing, computer, photography, and videography skills, preferably in a public education institution, or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills, and abilities

Must be proficient in Associated Press style

Ability to perform research and effectively gather, organize, and disseminate information and data

Demonstrated knowledge of public relations functions, principles, concepts, practices, and strategies

Effective organizational communication and interpersonal skills

Experience taking concepts/ideas and creating written content

Must provide a professional portfolio to include examples of related work


Five (5) years or more of successfully managing a school district communications office preferred

Media and Community Relations

1. Oversee the development and implementation of communication campaigns and action plans, department procedures, and other initiatives.

2. Serve as public information officer and designated spokesperson for the district and coordinates media events.

3. Respond to requests for public information as required in compliance with the Texas Public

Information Act

4. Communicate effectively with the media and plans meetings and activities to enhance dialogue with media on an as needed basis

5. Ability to form and maintain business partnerships

6. Serve as district representative on community committees as required

7. Provide news release services and distribution of photographs to area newspapers and educational journals

8. Monitor news media daily and maintains a record of items related to Beaumont ISD specifically and to the education field in general

9. Work with the staff in crisis situations that involve media coverage

10. Coordinate the board recognition segment of school board meetings

11. Coordinate, plan, and implement special projects such as teacher of the year, building dedications, convocation, retirement and staff service recognition

12. Coordinate the design and printing of district publications

13. Prepare and monitor the annual budget for the Office Of Community and Media Relations

14. Improve leadership skills through self-initiated professional development activities

15. Coordinate media interviews for the purpose of keeping the media informed of correct information concerning district activities

16. Maintain positive relations with students, principals, parents, school board, staff and community for the purpose of unifying efforts of all concerned

17. Prepare a wide variety of often complex materials (e.g. plans, event programs, news releases, parent and community letters, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and issues, meeting compliance requirements, making presentations, and/or providing supporting materials for requested actions

18. Respond to emergency situations both during and after normal working hours for the purpose of ensuring accurate information is disseminated

19. Promote the district's strengths/achievements, and its solutions to problems; vigorously publicize student, faculty and staff achievements

20. Plan and manage communications and public information services

21. Build and foster collaborative relationships with other departments, within the organization, to stay informed and current with new initiatives and services

22. Attend board meetings and prepare reports as requested

23. Advise the Superintendent and other senior level cabinet members on overarching communication strategy and positioning

24. Set the brand management strategy across various district divisions, departments, schools, initiatives, programs and events; ensuring continuity and consistency

25. Assist school personnel in publicizing and promoting school sponsored programs

26. Demonstrate regular and prompt attendance

27. Perform other duties as assigned

28. Perform duties in a professional, ethical , and responsible manner as defined in the TEA code of

Ethics for Education


1. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs

2. Administer the community and media relations budget and ensure that programs are cost effective and that funds are managed prudently.

Lead the management of staff of the Community and Media Relations Department in delivering best in class media relations, stakeholder engagement, marketing, and brand management in support of student achievement.

Manage a lean communications team to field calls from local, state, and national media. Shape messages that communicate BISD's education improvement goals and progress.


The Director of Community and Media Relations exhibits the following qualities:
