Employees at correctional facilities performcorrectional work regardless of their specific occupationLearn more about this agency### ResponsibilitiesUnder the supervision of the Captain, the Lieutenant serves as ashift supervisor in the Correctional Services department, givingsupervision and guidance to a subordinate staff of correctionalofficers involving work performance, interpretation of policy,handling of problems concerning the inmate population. In emergencysituations, takes prompt and decisive action to determine the natureand cause of the emergency. Authorizes changes in institutionaloperations when necessary to meet emergency situations.Responsible for implementing post orders, conducts training classesrelated to correctional procedures, responsible for enforcement ofall rules and regulation relative to custodial security of theinstitution, investigates reported violations of prohibited acts,(i.e. assaults, escapes, introduction of contraband, disturbances orother illicit activities), taking appropriate actions as dictated bythe seriousness of the violation. Incumbent may periodically beassigned as supervisor of a BOP bus in transporting both committedand U.S. Marshals prisoners to and from institutions and jails.Responsible for security of the special housing unit and the safe,secure housing of all inmates within the unit. Responsible formaintaining and documenting the various programs within the unit,i.e. feeding, recreation, unit sanitation, personal hygiene andmedical. The incumbent is responsible for the care, custody andsecurity of offenders who have been placed within the SpecialHousing Unit.Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbentis charged with responsibility for maintaining security of theinstitution. To be creditable, this experience must have equippedthe applicant with the particular qualifications to performsuccessfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in orrelated to the position to be filled.Some examples of this qualifying experience are:**GL-09:**- Experience working more responsible post, such as ControlCenter, Front/Rear Gate, and Visiting Room.- Experience providing training and guidance to lower-gradedofficers.- Experience and knowledge of BOP regulations and policies.- Experience initiating/participating in searching of inmates,inmate housing units and inmate working area to preventintroduction of contraband.**GS-11:**- Experience preparing, changing, and implementing post orders.- Experience preparing quarterly assignment rosters.- Experience conducting internal audits of all areas in aninstitution.- Experience providing guidance and counseling to employees.If applicable, Credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience.To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as thenumber of hours worked per week) spent in activities.\*\*Your eligibility for consideration will be based on yourresponses to the questions in the application.\*\*### EducationSee Qualifications Section for Education Requirements.### Additional informationThis position IS NOT included in the bargaining unit.In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has beenestablished for initial appointment to a position in a Bureau ofPrisons institution.The representative rate for this position is $68,462 per annum($32.80 per hour).**Special Conditions of Employment Section:**Initial appointment to a supervisory/managerial position requires aone-year probationary period.The incumbent is subject to geographic relocation to meet the needsof the agency.Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis,physical, and background investigation. All applicants are subjectto National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.All applicants not currently working in an institution will berequired to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictionsof misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorizedto carry a firearm.The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that mustbe facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicingoffice. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will beadministered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained.
